Iowa Gov. Reynolds Fires Up Support for DeSantis with Trump Retort
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has dashed any hopes of a prospective President Donald Trump endorsement. Speaking in Des Moines on Monday in support of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign, Gov. Reynolds threw her support behind her fellow Republican governor without mentioning Donald Trump. Although Iowa and Florida are both key states in the 2020 presidential election, Reynolds' support for Desantis appears to be the first indication of any possible 2020 GOP contenders. With a record low job approval rating and various scandals tarnishing the president's legacy, Reynolds' decision to stand in solidarity with DeSantis may ruffle some feathers in the White House. Reynolds is no stranger to controversial decisions. Most notably, her 2017 decision to sign one of the strictest abortion laws in the country sparked major public outcry. For Iowans, Reynolds' current public stance against the Trump administration has come as a surprise, but one many welcomed. The Iowa Governor praised Desantis as the Republican leader that Iowa needs in the White House. Quoting Conservative journalist Ben Shapiro, she stated that DeSantis “possesses the bravery and determination to both stand for strong principles and also compromise to get things done”. Reynolds' open support for DeSantis signals her desire to break away from the more polarizing elements of The Trump administration. It will be interesting to see if any other Republican governors step forward and declare their 2020 presidential endorsement. In any case, it is shaping up to be an exciting election year both in Iowa and all across the United States.
