The world was horrified to hear news from an Israeli official that infants may have been beheaded in an attack by Hamas. The information was supplied to the public in a press release from Knesset member Moti Yogev who represents the Likud party in June 2020. At the time of the press release, Yogev expressed that the government could not “verify” the reports that babies had been beheaded. However, he said that it seemed sadly likely given the nature of a recent attack that killed four members of a single family in their home. The attack, which took place on June 14 in the Deir al-Balah neighborhood of the Gaza Strip, resulted in the deaths of four members of a single family. The Israeli press reported at the time that the family was composed of three young children and their mother, who was pregnant. Yogev claimed that "children of this family were killed in a barbaric and horrifying manner, and ISIS-like.” While the massacre of the family was horrifying in and of itself, the suggestion that the killer had beheaded the infants in an even more brutal act was particularly concerning. Many human rights organizations have called for an investigation into this apparent crime and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. Until the results of these investigations are released, however, the truth of this troubling incident remains unknown.
